Welcome to another ENEX Partner series, where we introduce our global Partner firms and the people behind the organisations. Today we share with you some aspects about the Spanish economy. Also, we introduce to you Psicotec, the Spanish ENEX Partner.

When someone talks about Spain, it is easy to think of sun, beaches and vacations with sangria, paella and a good siesta. But, leaving stereotypes aside, the truth is that the Spanish economy in recent years has shown one of the most sustainable growth rates, both in terms of GDP and employment, in the EU. That is why it is worth asking what is happening in the Spanish labor market.

Winds of change in employment

The labor market in Spain is undergoing a period of transformation and expansion that offers numerous opportunities, specially located in the biggest cities of Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Málaga and Bilbao, but also in the Balearic (Majorca) and Canary Islands. Current trends reflect an increasing focus on high-value elements, especially in the key sectors of its economy.

It is true that it still has high levels of unemployment, especially among the young population, but the number of workers in the last five years has increased considerably, mostly linked to new hiring forms and an important arrival of foreign professionals.

As a result, we see a more dynamic, international working environment in a deep process of transformation. It is characterized by significant measures to support equality and diversity, which takes on the challenge of rethinking new working time models.

Main trends transforming the Spanish labor landscape

  • Digitalization: Technology continues to drive most of the changes in the labor market. The demand for profiles related to digital transformation, such as software developers and data analysts, continues to increase, becoming a key piece for companies. There are many companies that, hand in hand with AI, are streamlining and evolving their processes.
  • Sustainability: Concern for the environment is also leading the way in many sectors, such as renewable energies. Professionals specializing in this area are seeing increasing demand, with opportunities in both the creation and management of green infrastructure.

Fastest growing sectors

  1. Technology and IT: The IT sector continues to be one of the fields that generates the most employment, with profiles such as developers, technical support specialists and cybersecurity experts leading the way.
  2. Healthcare: With a growing demand for healthcare services, this sector continues to expand, requiring everything from doctors and nurses to technical personnel specialized in hospital management.
  3. Renewable energies: Energy transition policies have boosted this sector, where there is a strong need for engineers and technicians for solar and wind projects.
  4. Public sector: In recent years, there has been an important commitment to public employment at all levels. The Administration itself is modernizing, a change that, to a large extent, is being replicated and amplified by the private sector.
  5. Banking and insurance: This is one of the key sectors of the Spanish economy. It is immersed in restructuring processes, mergers and acquisitions while seeking to consolidate its international role.
  6. Railway industry: The transport of goods and people by train has been deeply dynamized since its privatization. There are new competitors and large investments in rail infrastructure at national and international level.

All these changes show a panorama, rich in opportunities. Spain is a market in transformation with a clear need for experienced professionals with leadership skills who are able to lead their teams and organizations through all these changes. The challenge? Identifying, attracting and engaging the needed professionals, something that can only be successfully achieved through optimized EXECUTIVE SEARCH processes.
